The tribe manages all commercial operations at Grand Canyon West under a 1988 federal compact that granted tourism development rights in exchange for infrastructure investment. Aerial approaches reveal geology unavailable from the South Rim's paved overlooks: the Great Unconformity, where 1.2-billion-year-old Vishnu basement rock meets 500-million-year-old Tapeats sandstone with no intervening strata, runs as a visible contact line along the inner gorge.
